The Riverside Medical Center, Inc. (RMCI) proudly announces the successful completion of its first pediatric open-heart surgery, marking a significant milestone in the medical history of Negros.
An 8-year-old male patient from Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, was diagnosed with congenital heart disease (Atrial Septal Defect Primum Type) underwent this pioneering procedure. He was admitted to the RMCI last May 17, 2024 and the operation was performed the following day.
The surgical team was led by his attending physician, Dr. Judah D. Gozar, a renowned Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist. Dr. Gozar conducted hemodynamic studies at the Riverside Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory before the surgery to assess the patient’s operability.
The open-heart surgery was meticulously carried out by Thoraco-vascular surgeons, Dr. Raphael Martin D. Hilado and Dr. Calvin Z. Fernandez. The anesthesia team, consisting of Thoraco-vascular anesthesiologists Dr. Mary Grace T. Manganti and Dr. Jorge Edward T. Masa, ensured the patient remained sedated and stable throughout the procedure.
This pioneering operation was conducted under the dedicated support and supervision of Dr. Ma. Antonia S. Gensoli, Vice-President Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Andrea Joanne A. Torre, Managing Consultant of the Centers of Excellence at the RMCI.
